About The Customer
Goy Architects' clients are diverse, ranging from homeowners to community organizations. For the Shizukokoro project, the client was a homeowner who desired a calm and serene living space. The design was inspired by traditional Japanese ryokans, with the aim of creating a home that evokes tranquility. For The Heng House, the client was a woman who lived with her parents and required a studio space for the pro bono Pilates classes she conducts for people with mobility issues. The home also needed to be spacious enough to host both intimate and large gatherings, including community meetings hosted by her father, who is involved with a rehabilitation project for ex-offenders. The client had an interest in up-cycling materials and appreciated antique Javanese timber doors and windows, which were incorporated into the design.
The Challenge
Goy Architects, a Singapore-based firm, is known for its holistic design solutions that span architecture, interior design, and furnishings. The firm's challenge lies in realizing their design concepts within the constraints of budget and timeline. The custom-made furniture, sourced regionally, adds another layer of logistical complexity to their projects. The firm collaborates with colleagues in Singapore, Chiangmai, and Bali on local and regional projects. Two of their projects, Shizukokoro and The Heng House, presented unique challenges. Shizukokoro, a five-room flat, was inspired by the concept of a 'calm mind' in Japanese and required the creation of an intimate landscape frame for the living room. The Heng House, a double-story terrace house, needed to accommodate a studio space for pro bono Pilates classes and be spacious enough for both intimate and large gatherings.
The Solution
To overcome these challenges, Goy Architects turned to Archicad, a design platform that they have been using since 2016. The software allowed them to work smarter and more flexibly, which was crucial given the firm's international collaborations. Archicad's BIMCloud solution enabled the team to work simultaneously and collaboratively, regardless of their geographical locations. The updated model was then presented in the BIMx format, allowing clients to fully immerse themselves in the final design space and provide constructive feedback. The schedules function in Archicad helped the architects order materials more accurately and offered a quantity check for the estimated project cost, enabling better control of the budget. Goy Architects also used Teamwork, BIMcloud, and OPEN BIM workflows to work more flexibly and communicate more interactively.
Operational Impact
  • The use of Archicad and its various features has had a significant impact on Goy Architects' practice. It has allowed them to manage their projects more efficiently and work more flexibly, even when team members are based in different countries. This has opened up the possibility of taking on regional assignments. The firm believes that using Graphisoft software solutions and delivering on time and on budget adds credibility to their team. It also enables them to produce relevant drawings for discussion without excessive man-hours. The clients have been delighted by the final design outcome and appreciate that the perspectives are accurate to the final on-site construction. The use of BIMx has given them better control of the design outcome, as builders can access the BIM model on the construction site.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Goy Architects' projects, Shizukokoro and The Heng House, won the prestigious Lookbox Design Awards in several categories.
  • The use of Archicad software allowed for more accurate ordering of materials and better control of the project budget.
  • The BIMCloud solution enabled simultaneous and collaborative work among team members based in different countries.
