AgriFutures Australia is a government organization that invests in research and development to help sustain and grow rural industries. They provide support and development to 13 levied industries, and other emerging industries. They also provide support for industry-wide national challenges and opportunities. Their research programs help rural industries understand key issues, provide knowledge that will help guide decision-making for the long term, as well as sharing learning and knowledge across rural communities. AgriFutures Australia works with each of its 13 levied industries to help them implement a rolling five-year plan. They award and administer funding for relevant research, development, and extension programs, which help provide insights into addressing new and innovative ways to tackle industry challenges.
The Challenge
AgriFutures Australia, a government organization that invests in research and development to sustain and grow rural industries, was facing challenges with its on-premise project management software used to manage the research grant process. The process was manual, time-consuming, and difficult for both staff and research applicants. The situation was further complicated by the 2019 bushfires in Australia, which highlighted the need for a better disaster recovery strategy. The existing platform was hard to develop on, making it difficult to add new enhancements. Additionally, there was a high demand for IT helpdesk support to assist people in submitting applications.
The Solution
AgriFutures Australia decided to move to the cloud as part of a broader digital transformation project. After going to market for a new system, they chose Nintex K2 Cloud as their preferred solution. The cloud-based workflow platform offered open APIs and good integration points with their existing systems, allowing AgriFutures Australia to implement a best-of-breed technology stack that could be used across all areas of the business. The full solution was live in six months. The research process is now mapped out end-to-end, with all approvals and delegations embedded into the workflow process. Program Managers can now initiate and manage their own projects, from opening a call for applications, to receiving applications, awarding them, and managing the program once the research is underway.

Buoy Status Monitoring with LoRa
The Netherlands are well-known for their inland waterways, canals, sluices and of course port activities. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure indicates that there are thousands of buoys and fixed items in and near water environments that would profit from IoT monitoring. One of the problems with buoys for example, is that they get hit by ships and the anchor cable breaks. Without connectivity, it takes quite some time to find out that something has happened with that buoy. Not to mention the costs of renting a boat to go to the buoy to fix it. Another important issue, is that there is no real-time monitoring of the buoys at this moment. Only by physically visiting the object on the water, one gains insight in its status.
