They were spending a considerable amount of time pulling and prepping data, which left minimal time for actual analysis. The team was primarily using Excel, which was not only time-consuming but also hindered any potential cost savings for the department. The team wanted to automate the process but lacked the necessary expertise. While they were proficient in Excel and Tableau, they had limited experience in automation or coding. After researching various software, they found that most required extensive knowledge of Python and R, which they did not possess. They discovered Alteryx, which was user-friendly and had extensive out-of-the-box functionality.
The Solution
Alteryx provided the healthcare provider with a streamlined solution to analyze and make decisions for their supply chain organization. The software allowed the team to reduce their spend and optimize efficiency across different departments and practices. The team used Alteryx to automate their main method to pull data for the Opportunity Analysis. This process, which previously took over 40 hours of weekly scrubbing and data prep, was now automated and repeatable. The data analysts could then easily organize and analyze the findings in Tableau to make strategic decisions on supplier standardization, conversion, and cost information. Alteryx also allowed the team to monitor maverick buying of items, providing an increased level of granularity that enabled them to identify opportunities to minimize spend. The team is currently using Alteryx for a data-driven project to engage physicians to identify and standardize the use of items and drugs to produce the same outcomes at a lower cost.

In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
