Bike Totaal B.V. is a two-wheeler specialist group based in the Netherlands. Its dynamic retail organization comprises of 165 affiliated stores that are managed by independent entrepreneurs. The stores sell bicycles and bicycle accessories and provide bicycle repair services. The company is committed to providing high-quality products and services to its customers, and it relies on data to make informed decisions about its operations. The company's ability to analyze data from its various affiliated stores is crucial to its success. With half of the stores managed centrally and the other half decentralized, it is vital for Bike Totaal to have a clear overview of the performance of all the stores.
The Challenge
Bike Totaal B.V., a two-wheeler specialist group with 165 affiliated stores, faced a challenge in analyzing and reporting key performance indicators (KPIs) from its various stores. With half of the stores managed centrally and the other half decentralized, it was crucial to have a clear overview of the performance of all the stores. The company needed to know how many products each store sold, for which brands, the revenue per square meter, and so on. It was also important to provide entrepreneurs and suppliers with insight into the lead times of products and their results, so they could optimize their business operations. Prior to implementing a Business Intelligence solution, Bike Totaal collected information from various databases and Excel sheets as well as its Point of Sales system. This data was compiled and processed manually in Excel, which was time-consuming and inefficient.
The Solution
In 2008, Bike Totaal decided to evaluate its reporting and analysis methodology. After deliberation with Abacus Retail, a retail automation provider, it decided to implement a Business Intelligence tool that would automate the reporting system and allow the headquarters of Bike Totaal and its affiliated entrepreneurs to independently measure the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for their business operations and compare these metrics with those of their colleagues. They chose QlikView for its flexibility, speed, and well-organized graphical interface. The implementation of QlikView at Bike Totaal's headquarters began in 2009. Two of their IT people took up the challenge of implementing the Business Intelligence solution at Bike Totaal. They performed an analysis of the required KPIs as well as the data required for this purpose. They linked all this data with QlikView and selected the Retail Performance Management template, created by QlikView partner Abacus Retail, as a basis.
Operational Impact
