The company has a clear and simple vision: To deliver the right commodity, in time – and at the right price. The company has 56 branch offices all over the country and offers more than 50,000 part numbers. The company experiences an increasing demand through their e-trade system bdNet, where customers have access to the entire range of products, extensive product information, knowledge about product optimizing, availability, order status, total expenditure, order history and much more. The thought was that for the customer e-trade should provide more than just a fast purchase. Brdr. Dahl has taken e-trade to the next level and offers vital information – not just for the individual procurement manager, but information that can be useful for all in the customer’s company.
The Challenge
Brdr. Dahl A/S, Denmark’s leading distributor within plumbing, contracting, water supply, industry tools, and technical commodities, was facing challenges with their existing Business Intelligence (BI) solution. The development and design of new applications were time-consuming, and the company was dealing with a large volume of data. The company was also experiencing growing information needs due to increasing web-based trading. The logistics department at the head office of Brdr. Dahl in Brøndby, near Copenhagen, had used a traditional BI solution for a couple of years. They were actually content with their solution, but the development and design of new applications were time-consuming.
The Solution
Brdr. Dahl A/S decided to implement QlikView, a Business Intelligence tool, to address their challenges. QlikView was fed with the same data as their old solution, but presented the analysis in a whole new way. QlikView showed them things they didn’t already know. User-friendliness and flexibility in relation to analysis are vital when you constantly try to see things in a new way. With QlikView, Brdr. Dahl could start an innovative process, because the results quickly and easily can be combined and integrated in a vast number of ways. From the decision to implement QlikView was taken, it only took 2-3 weeks before the first useful analysis and results could be presented in clear graphic form. Brdr. Dahl transfers every day 16-20,000 transactions into QlikView, meaning that the analysable data volume is growing rapidly and provides the company with an invaluable knowledge to base their future decisions on.

Hospital Inventory Management
The hospital supply chain team is responsible for ensuring that the right medical supplies are readily available to clinicians when and where needed, and to do so in the most efficient manner possible. However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. Barcoding technology, a commonly used method for inventory management of medical supplies, is labor intensive, time consuming, does not provide real-time visibility into inventory levels and can be prone to error. Consequently, the lack of accurate and real-time visibility into inventory levels across multiple supply rooms in multiple hospital facilities creates additional inefficiency in the system causing over-ordering, hoarding, and wasted supplies. Other sources of waste and cost were also identified as candidates for improvement. Existing systems and processes did not provide adequate security for high-cost inventory within the hospital, which was another driver of cost. A lack of visibility into expiration dates for supplies resulted in supplies being wasted due to past expiry dates. Storage of supplies was also a key consideration given the location of the cancer center’s facilities in a dense urban setting, where space is always at a premium. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
