Dunlop Hiflex Oy is a distribution company that specializes in high and low-pressure hoses and fittings. The company has a distribution network that includes a central warehouse, 13 sales outlets, and 70 distributors in Finland. There are also two sales outlets and a few distributors in Estonia. The company serves thousands of customers with a range of over 30,000 active articles, making an annual turnover of more than €33 million with approximately 180 employees. The number of annual sales transactions is around 1 million. Daily operations take place close to the customers, consisting of distributors, dealers, large OEM customers, and thousands of smaller customers. A wide range of products, effective distribution network, and excellent customer service are Dunlop Hiflex’s key success factors.
The Challenge
Dunlop Hiflex Oy, a distribution company specialized in high and low-pressure hoses and fittings, was facing challenges in managing its vast data. The company had streamlined its business processes with the Movex ERP system, which stored all data around sales, purchases, inventories, and deliveries. However, managing this data was challenging in a marketplace where quick deliveries and excellent customer service played central roles. The operational knowledge of the Movex ERP system varied widely across the organization, creating a bottleneck and making analysis too slow. The IT staff was overwhelmed with frequent requests for aggregated information, resulting in the inability to deliver timely information. The company needed a solution that all employees could use to quickly and easily modify the data to meet their personal requirements.
The Solution
Dunlop Hiflex implemented QlikView, a data visualization and business intelligence tool, to address its data management challenges. The tool was deployed to approximately 50 employees across three functional areas, with the applications up and running in less than eight weeks. QlikView made critical data analysis fast and easy, allowing the company to improve sales performance and profitability with a reduction in inventory costs. With QlikView Server and Publisher, the company could easily handle the large data volume of 1 million sales transactions annually across 30,000 products that was previously locked in its IBM System i (AS/400) based Movex ERP system.

As of 2014, AK-Centralen has over 1,500 Danish supermarkets equipped, and utilizes 16 operators, and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. AK-Centralen needed the ability to monitor the cooling alarms from around the country, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Each and every time the door to a milk cooler or a freezer does not close properly, an alarm goes off on a computer screen in a control building in southwestern Odense. This type of alarm will go off approximately 140,000 times per year, equating to roughly 400 alarms in a 24-hour period. Should an alarm go off, then there is only a limited amount of time to act before dairy products or frozen pizza must be disposed of, and this type of waste can quickly start to cost a supermarket a great deal of money.

Supermarket Energy Savings
The client had previously deployed a one-meter-per-store monitoring program. Given the manner in which energy consumption changes with external temperature, hour of the day, day of week and month of year, a single meter solution lacked the ability to detect the difference between a true problem and a changing store environment. Most importantly, a single meter solution could never identify root cause of energy consumption changes. This approach never reduced the number of truck-rolls or man-hours required to find and resolve issues.
