About The Customer
Bundesagentur für Arbeit (BA) provides comprehensive labor and education services for residents as well as businesses and institutions. The BA has a nationwide network of agencies and offices to perform these tasks. With more than 100,000 employees, the BA is the largest government agency in Germany and one of the nation’s biggest employers. Its IT department manages 160,000 networked PC workstations. As a result, the agency’s IT and accompanying infrastructure comprise one of the largest IT landscapes in Germany.
The Challenge
The Bundesagentur für Arbeit (BA) operates one of the largest IT landscapes in Germany with numerous IT processes, many of them business-critical. The agency can only perform its tasks smoothly if it has effective IT support. Therefore, the BA has high requirements for process availability, performance and scalability. These requirements are reflected in the IT target landscape, which is designed to provide future-proof support for BA business processes. The BA’s IT strategy is to take a comprehensive approach and avoid compromise from a purely technical perspective. The IT department’s vision serves as the foundation for ongoing IT strategy development. That vision is to be the most capable, high-performance and cost-effective service provider in the public sector.
The Solution
In 2009, the BA worked with IDS Scheer Consulting, then a Software AG brand, to implement a comprehensive Enterprise Architecture (EA) management solution based on the ARIS platform. This solution is the central information repository for ongoing management of the agency’s IT landscape. The system was expanded in 2011 to include an IT roadmap management tool, which is used to create plans for expanding and maintaining the IT target landscape. Now the BA can rely on a consistent central repository that uniformly documents all IT systems, applications, components and interfaces. The decentralized, Web-based inventory performed by those responsible for the system ensures that it is always up-to-date. Comprehensive evaluation functions are especially helpful for analyzing and further developing the agency’s IT.
