About The Customer
LANXESS is a leading specialty chemicals company based in Cologne, Germany. The company energizes chemistry for the 21st-Century, producing, developing, and marketing chemical intermediates, additives, specialty chemicals, and plastics for some of the top businesses around the globe. With sales of €7.2 billion, LANXESS has over 15,500 employees in 33 countries and is represented at 60 production sites worldwide. The company has halved its emissions since 2004 and is on track to be carbon neutral by 2040. LANXESS delivers on time, on budget, and above quality to its global clients, whether they need a quick turn-around on a mission-critical run of inorganic pigments or a regular supply of advanced industrial intermediates.
The Challenge
LANXESS, a leading specialty chemicals company, operates in a fiercely competitive market worth over €1 trillion. The company needed to ensure timely, quality, and cost-effective delivery of its products. To thrive, LANXESS needed a solution that would provide its production specialists with operational and production data to continuously improve the operational performance of their plants. The company also aimed to democratize data for all its employees. In 2017, LANXESS established a dedicated service unit to push digital business models, introduce new technologies along the entire value chain, and work on the use of big data and the embedding of digital skills among its employees.
The Solution
In 2018, LANXESS chose TrendMiner, Software AG’s self-service industrial analytics solution, to bring transparency to operational and production processes and democratize data for all its employees. The solution was implemented across 70 percent of LANXESS plants worldwide, including all major sites in Europe and North America. The implementation of TrendMiner enabled autonomous data analysis based on recognition of previous events and patterns, early warning notification, and predictive maintenance intelligence. This meant that LANXESS process engineers didn’t have to be data scientists to make data-driven decisions. The solution empowered production specialists with data to significantly increase capacity utilization, cut costs, and improve energy efficiency.

Advanced Elastomer Systems Upgrades Production
In order to maintain its share of the international market for thermoplastic elastomers AES recently expanded its Florida plant by adding a new production line. While the existing lines were operating satisfactorily using a PROVOX distributed control system with traditional analog I/O, AES wanted advanced technology on the new line for greater economy, efficiency, and reliability. AES officials were anxious to get this line into production to meet incoming orders, but two hurricanes slowed construction.

Field Device Asset Management For Chemical Company in China
Chinese chemical subsidiary of multinational corporation serves customers throughout the world. Sales offices and research and technology centers are strategically located to provide rapid response to customer requests. Just two workers were assigned to maintain thousands of intelligent instruments in three production units, so they could do little more than react to device issues as they appeared. This costly maintenance method inevitably led to unexpected downtime when a critical instrument failed. Plant management recognized the need to change from reactive to predictive maintenance for all assets, including instruments and control valves, but help was needed in implementing such a technology-based initiative.
