About The Customer
Federazione Lombarda di Banche di Credito Cooperativo (FLBCC) is a federation of small and medium-sized banks at the local level in Lombardy, northern Italy. Its mandate is to provide a number of specialized services—including legal and fiscal advice, risk consulting, internal risk control, and strategic planning implementation—to the 46 small banks in the region that belong to the federation. It has control, representative, and business management responsibilities. As part of its supervisory role, FLBCC has to process and analyze the import of 1 million data lines and 24 million records each month from its member banks. Technology plays an important role at FLBCC in managing risk and meeting regulatory compliance throughout the federation.
The Challenge
Federazione Lombarda di Banche di Credito Cooperativo (FLBCC) had to process and analyze the import of 1 million data lines and 24 million records each month from its member banks. The federation had built its previous data management solution in-house based on software from ACL Services. However, by 2011, FLBCC needed to replace this system with a more agile and scalable business discovery platform to improve productivity with easy-to-use self-service discovery capabilities. The in-house platform required a number of manual interventions and cumbersome repetitions of controls. Databases had to be downloaded and manually processed to obtain historical analysis on a monthly basis. The task was difficult, time-consuming, and error-prone. FLBCC also found that the ACL solution could produce analysis covering a short time span, but wasn’t suitable for longer-term reports.
The Solution
FLBCC invested in QlikView primarily to perform internal audits, reduce operational risk, and guarantee reliable but flexible business processes for the federation. The highly scalable solution was rolled out to 130 document users and four named users within 20 days—all without any installation issues. QlikView is not a black-box product—it’s extremely flexible, scalable, and simple to modify and maintain in line with specific requirements. Plus, data imports are easily visualized in graphical format. By comparison, other business intelligence products such as Visual Intelligence and SAP BusinessObjects have many functions, are difficult to implement, and require advanced IT skills. QlikView allows staff to carry out complex on-demand analysis on a self-service basis. QlikView is designed to integrate tightly with existing security systems and data sources. By offering an agile business discovery tool that automates many monitoring functions, there’s no longer any need for routine manual intervention by IT technicians.
Operational Impact
  • The time for big data imports that need processing has been reduced by 50 percent.
  • QlikView manages all the scheduled activities, such as generating and splitting documents for the banks.
  • It automatically publishes them, which helps staff cope with the continuous increase in big data from all sides.
  • The code is sufficiently flexible for us to improve performance even further based on our specialized requirements.
  • Automation also improves quality control and reduces the risk of human error when extracting data from disparate sources.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Increased staff productivity by 20 percent
  • Automation of functions saves at least one working day a month
