About The Customer
GE Digital is a leading software company that developed the Predix cloud-based platform to help organizations build tailored mobile apps for collecting and analyzing data from intelligent machines. The Predix platform is designed to connect industrial equipment, analyze data, and deliver real-time insights, thereby optimizing machine performance, preventing failures, and ensuring field personnel are working where they’re needed most. GE Digital's customers are organizations that rely on state-of-the-art machines and need to resolve equipment problems and improve efficiencies in real time. These organizations operate in various sectors of the economy, including those that were previously remote and isolated.
The Challenge
GE Digital's software team developed an innovative solution, the Predix cloud-based platform, to address the challenges posed by the vast amounts of data generated by state-of-the-art machines. Predix allows organizations to build tailored mobile apps that help field personnel collect and analyze data from intelligent machines. However, the initial release of Predix required a data platform that could provide strong stability without relying on internet connectivity. This posed a significant challenge as field workers needed to monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment even in remote locations with limited or no network connectivity.
The Solution
GE Digital found the solution in Couchbase's NoSQL data platform for mobile and web, which offered the synchronization capability they needed. The flexible base model from Couchbase allowed GE to migrate to the new solution, replacing all functionality built with the first version, in just 30 days. This freed up GE's top engineers to focus on the core features of their platform. Couchbase Mobile was integrated into Predix, storing data locally on workers’ mobile devices, allowing the Predix-powered app to continue working even when offline. When the network becomes available, data is automatically synchronized to the cloud in a secure, seamless process that’s invisible to the user. Couchbase also enabled complex customer analytics, flexible data modeling, and provided a variety of data management and processing options.

Smart Water Filtration Systems
Before working with Ayla Networks, Ozner was already using cloud connectivity to identify and solve water-filtration system malfunctions as well as to monitor filter cartridges for replacements. But, in June 2015, Ozner executives talked with Ayla about how the company might further improve its water systems with IoT technology. They liked what they heard from Ayla, but the executives needed to be sure that Ayla’s Agile IoT Platform provided the security and reliability Ozner required.

Predictive Maintenance for Industrial Chillers
For global leaders in the industrial chiller manufacturing, reliability of the entire production process is of the utmost importance. Chillers are refrigeration systems that produce ice water to provide cooling for a process or industrial application. One of those leaders sought a way to respond to asset performance issues, even before they occur. The intelligence to guarantee maximum reliability of cooling devices is embedded (pre-alarming). A pre-alarming phase means that the cooling device still works, but symptoms may appear, telling manufacturers that a failure is likely to occur in the near future. Chillers who are not internet connected at that moment, provide little insight in this pre-alarming phase.
