The General Motor (GM) Global Battery Systems Lab
The General Motor (GM) Global Battery Systems Lab is responsible for testing all lithium-ion batteries for GM vehicles. The 38-employee lab tests prototypes and production batteries as part of a plan to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.
Testing expensive battery prototypes is an around-the-clock job for the engineers at GM’s Global Battery Systems Lab. Excessive heat or high voltage can make batteries unstable or vulnerable to damage. Confirming the reason for the alarm and eliminating fault alerts sometimes requires onsite investigation, often at non-business hours.
The team uses Java, with guidance from the BlackBerry Corporate Developer Program, to develop the General Motors LABerry application. The custom application links to the lab’s monitoring and alert software so that engineers receive detailed test information on their BlackBerry smartphones.
