Chalk Mountain Services is a leading company in the oilfield services industry. They manage the transportation and logistics of sand and water for customers across Texas and New Mexico. The company prides itself on providing a high level of care for its employees, with one of its core principles being 'Safety Always'. Chalk Mountain operates a large fleet, including 275 tractors, 400 vehicles, 900 trailers, and employs over 480 drivers. Despite their commitment to safety, the company was facing challenges with preventable accidents and unnecessary payouts, which were impacting their business.
The Challenge
Chalk Mountain Services, a leader in the oilfield services industry, was facing a significant challenge with driver safety. The company, which manages the transportation and logistics of sand and water across Texas and New Mexico, had limited visibility into the safety of their drivers on the road. This lack of insight was leading to preventable accidents and unnecessary worker’s compensation payouts, which were costing the business significantly. Without video evidence, Chalk Mountain was unable to exonerate innocent drivers from not-at-fault accidents and false claims. The company was in search of a solution that would not only enhance driver safety but also engage drivers in the process.
The Solution
In 2021, Chalk Mountain implemented a video-based safety solution by rolling out dual-facing AI Dash Cams across their fleet. These AI-based In-Cab alerts provided real-time feedback to drivers on risky behaviors such as distracted driving and tailgating, helping to prevent accidents before they occurred. In addition, Chalk Mountain’s safety team used the Safety Inbox to proactively identify coachable moments and give drivers feedback using actual footage of themselves. This real video footage helped them avoid disputes and facilitated positive one-on-one coaching conversations with drivers. The company also ensured the timeliness, effectiveness, and accountability of their coaching efforts by coaching safety events within 3 days. The implementation of Samsara's solution led to drivers being more engaged in safety and accepting the use of dash cams.

For Fox and his team, these requirements meant turning to the cloud instead of an on-premises datacenter. “My first thought was to go directly to the cloud because we needed to provide access not only to our salespeople, but to resellers who didn’t have access to our internal network,” says Fox. “The cloud just seemed like a logical choice.”
