About The Customer
ALTE OLDENBURGER Krankenversicherung AG was founded in 1927 as a 'farmer’s health insurance' for the social security of small farmers and others in the Oldenburger Münsterland. In the late 80s, it took its comprehensive health insurance offerings nationwide across Germany. Today, its 250 committed employees provide exceptional insurance coverage at comparatively favorable conditions to all 160,000 customers, generating 220 million euros in revenue annually. The company is known for its unrivalled commitment to exceptional, lifelong customer service and is counted among the private health insurance companies with the lowest administrative costs, above-average repayment accruals, and exceptional price performance ratios.
The Challenge
ALTE OLDENBURGER Krankenversicherung AG, a leading health insurance provider in Germany, was facing the challenge of modernizing their legacy claim processing system. The existing system was over 20 years old and was not able to keep up with the changing business requirements. The traditional process required customers to save their medical bills and mail them all in at the end of the year, leading to a 'claims tsunami'. The company wanted to enable a new service where customers could use their smartphones to snap and send pictures of their medical bills for processing the moment they received them. This would not only provide convenience to the customers but also distribute the work throughout the year.
The Solution
In 2016, ALTE OLDENBURGER decided to modernize their claim processing process running on a Linux platform. They integrated VERSIS into a service-oriented architecture (SOA) using webMethods Integration Server and EntireX. The software architects at ALTE OLDENBURGER, being members of the Natural User Group, had heard what the agile development environment NaturalONE could do. So in late 2017, they implemented NaturalONE. With NaturalONE, the team was able to automate the software development process, improving the response time to new business requirements. Now developers can release new code to the production environment in 15 minutes, which used to take days. And deployment can happen anytime because breaking or damaging the system is impossible.
Operational Impact
  • Reuse of differentiating business logic in new business initiatives
  • Improved application stability and performance
  • Better business responsiveness leveraging DevOps
  • Reduced deployment time from days to 15 minutes
Quantitative Benefit
  • Achieved 35% adoption rate of new mobile claims app
  • Saved 20+ years of domain experience, not to mention time and huge budget
