About The Customer
Elara Caring is a Dallas-based company and one of the largest providers of home health care in the United States. The company operates across 16 states in the Northeast, Midwest, and Southwest, employing approximately 32,000 caregivers in over 200 locations. Elara Caring serves over 60,000 patients and their families daily. The company is the result of a merger of three home healthcare companies and offers comprehensive personal care, skilled home care, hospice care, and behavioral health services.
The Challenge
Elara Caring, one of the largest providers of home health care in the U.S., faced significant challenges following the merger of three home healthcare companies. The consolidation created new opportunities but also posed difficulties for the company’s IT infrastructure and data security. The Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Eric Bowerman, was primarily concerned with protecting end-users from phishing and ransomware attacks, which are common in the healthcare industry. The shift to a work-from-home environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic further complicated matters. The company had limited management software on the laptops of remote workers, which meant they did not have the same control as when the employees were in the office. This presented compliance issues related to protected health information (PHI).
The Solution
To address these challenges, Bowerman conducted extensive research, spoke to vendors, and conducted POCs. He eventually selected Rapid7 InsightVM, a leading vulnerability management solution, and Rapid7 Managed Detection and Response (MDR) service for 24/7 threat detection and response. Bowerman focused on the most critical security areas, including endpoint security controls, governance, risk, and compliance, and vulnerability management. Given the small size of the security team and the diverse infrastructure they had to protect, Bowerman was looking for a solution that could act as a 'force multiplier.' Rapid7's MDR solution offered a SIEM, a team of experts, 24/7 monitoring, and proactive threat hunting. Rapid7 also provided a single agent for MDR/SIEM and vulnerability management solutions, which was a compelling argument for Bowerman.

Hospital Inventory Management
The hospital supply chain team is responsible for ensuring that the right medical supplies are readily available to clinicians when and where needed, and to do so in the most efficient manner possible. However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. Storage of supplies was also a key consideration given the location of the cancer center’s facilities in a dense urban setting, where space is always at a premium. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
