The Challenge
SmartrMail, a company that provides tools for strategic email marketing campaigns, was initially developed in 2016 to boost sales of Bluethumb, an online art marketplace. The company found that existing email marketing tools were either too basic or lacked the necessary functionality and features, such as personalisation, to create compelling emails quickly. Today, SmartrMail is used by over nine thousand small-to-medium e-commerce businesses for automated customer outreach. However, with the increase in e-commerce sales due to the global pandemic, SmartrMail's email volumes have doubled since the beginning of 2021, from 50 million a month to 80 million today, with the expectation of hitting 100 million by the end of the year. This growth meant that SmartrMail needed more cost-efficient and robust email and SMS solutions to support customer expansions.
The Solution
SmartrMail turned to Twilio for their SendGrid Email platform and Programmable SMS platform. Recognising the untapped potential of SMS for marketing in Australia, SmartrMail chose the Twilio Programmable SMS platform first. Twilio's solution provided the right developer-friendly resources and tools that could enable more advanced SMS features at the right price. SmartrMail also chose Twilio for their email solution, as it was crucial for them to provide their merchant customers with an email solution that would be delivered and received in less than two minutes. Twilio SendGrid was the right solution that would enable these merchants to deliver an exceptional email experience to their customers and ensure that their emails would arrive on time. In just one week, SmartrMail was able to integrate Twilio’s SendGrid Email APIs into their email marketing app.
Operational Impact

This has ensured that their emails arrive on time, enhancing the email experience for their customers. Additionally, Twilio’s SendGrid Email APIs have enabled some of SmartrMail’s email personalisation capabilities, such as merge fields that allow for certain customer data to be highlighted or pulled in. This has led to an increase in customer engagement and ultimately more sales. SmartrMail is also planning to integrate Whatsapp Business API from Twilio to offer Whatsapp services in the near future.
