About The Customer
Cray Valley is a member of Total S.A., the French multinational oil company, and is a global leader in the manufacture of resins, composites and coatings used in paint, varnishes and adhesives. The company has manufacturing facilities located throughout Spain, with distribution to a worldwide customer base. Its plant in Mollet del Valles, near Barcelona, specializes in alkyd resin, acrylic and emulsion production, and supplies the international market with more than 20,000 tons of product each year. To keep pace with growing worldwide demand for its chemical products, plant management determined it was time to update the plant’s production control and monitoring system to improve manufacturing of its alkyd resin products.
The Challenge
Cray Valley, a global leader in the manufacture of resins, composites and coatings, needed to update the control and monitoring of its three alkyd resin production manufacturing lines. The existing technology architecture had become obsolete and was no longer supported by the original developer. The aging PLC control system and SCADA infrastructure had no available technical support, access to spare parts or software updates, putting the entire manufacturing operation at risk. The challenge was to convert the plant to a new system capable of ensuring total visibility throughout the production process in a controlled and timely manner. The project also had to be implemented quickly to avoid disruption of manufacturing operations.
The Solution
The engineering team at Cray Valley recognized the need to standardize manufacturing operations on a single, scalable software infrastructure, and selected Wonderware System Platform from Invensys Operations Management to streamline and enhance its production processes. Wonderware System Platform was chosen to replace the aging control infrastructure because the software provided a high level of production monitoring as well as easy deployment. The software provides a high level of scalability, enabling plant management to leverage the technology throughout other areas of Cray Valley’s manufacturing operations. Standardizing its infrastructure on Wonderware System Platform enables the company to easily revise and implement new production lines as needed to maintain production schedules.

Advanced Elastomer Systems Upgrades Production
In order to maintain its share of the international market for thermoplastic elastomers AES recently expanded its Florida plant by adding a new production line. While the existing lines were operating satisfactorily using a PROVOX distributed control system with traditional analog I/O, AES wanted advanced technology on the new line for greater economy, efficiency, and reliability. AES officials were anxious to get this line into production to meet incoming orders, but two hurricanes slowed construction.

Field Device Asset Management For Chemical Company in China
Chinese chemical subsidiary of multinational corporation serves customers throughout the world. Sales offices and research and technology centers are strategically located to provide rapid response to customer requests. Just two workers were assigned to maintain thousands of intelligent instruments in three production units, so they could do little more than react to device issues as they appeared. This costly maintenance method inevitably led to unexpected downtime when a critical instrument failed. Plant management recognized the need to change from reactive to predictive maintenance for all assets, including instruments and control valves, but help was needed in implementing such a technology-based initiative.
