Davenport Energy was looking for a way to better track and manage their large, diverse fleet of vehicles by delivering real-time data and providing the ability to track, locate and manage their drivers while out in the field.

Graco industrial sprayer customers needed real-time data to maximize utilization of assets and crews, to deter unauthorized use of equipment, to keep equipment in top condition, and to provide more accurate job estimates and billing statements.

PacifiCorp needed to monitor a 10-mile stretch of canal near the North Umpqua River 24/7 to prevent environmental damage. A reliable solar powered communications device with a small enough footprint to fit inside protective cabinets needed to be managed remotely when engineers are not available to make adjustments to the device directly.

Day & Night wanted to alleviate customer concerns and provide service confirmation by answering these questions: Did Day & Night arrive when it said it would? How long did it take Day & Night to complete a certain job? At what speed did Day & Night drivers operate while at a certain site.

When a Tadano crane out in the field requires service, a Tadano service engineer must drive to the work site to check and maintain the crane. Because these trucks are located throughout North America at service engineers’ homes, it can be difficult to track truck locations and schedules. Since long periods of downtime are unacceptable to most customers, fleet availability and proximity to their location plays a big part in resolving issues quickly.Low visibility into the fleet was just one reason Tadano began looking for a fleet management service. In addition, because most of the service vehicles drive 60,000-80,000 miles or more in just two years, it is important for Tadano to maintain their fleet to ensure readiness to meet service requests.

Today, interoperability is a challenge. Communicating between programmable logic controllers (PLCs) from different vendors and with other peripheral devices on the same system presents difficulties. Industrial IoT companies rely on remote devices to control, monitor and maintain the health of their systems. The RTU, or remote terminal unit, transmits telemetry data to the PLC via the DCS or SCADA system and uses messages from them to control connected objects. For example, oil and gas companies need to know the status of pressure and volume on their pipeline. They may need to open or close valves depending on the conditions, which operators would do by communicating with the RTUs.When updates to the hardware were required, these companies were faced with limited options. They could either buy more devices from the same vendor, which was restrictive. Or, they could purchase from another manufacturer and then invest more time and money to have their SCADA integrator reprogrammed.
