Overview

A mesh network is a local network topology in which the infrastructure nodes, such as bridges, switches, and gateways, connect directly, dynamically and non-hierarchically to many other nodes and cooperate with one another to efficiently route data to and from clients. The lack of dependency on a central node allows for every node to participate in the relay of information. Mesh networks dynamically self-organize and self-configure, which can reduce installation overhead. The ability to self-configure enables dynamic distribution of workloads, particularly in the event that nodes fail. This in turn contributes to fault-tolerance and reduced maintenance costs. Mesh networks facilitate IoT adoption by extending the network in a reliable manner so that other devices can join local networks. They allow devices that are not powerful enough to join Wi-Fi or cellular networks to join the IoT network. The self-healing and self-configuring features of mesh networks also help to make networking more efficient by reducing energy consumption, downtime, and administration requirements.

Business Viewpoint

Scalability: Mesh networks are highly scalable, allowing businesses to expand their network coverage easily without significant infrastructure investments. This scalability is particularly beneficial for businesses experiencing growth or operating in dynamic environments.

Reliability: Mesh networks provide redundancy and fault tolerance, ensuring reliable connectivity even in challenging environments or in the event of network failures. This reliability is crucial for businesses that rely on constant connectivity for their operations, such as manufacturing facilities or logistics operations.

Stakeholder Viewpoint

Network Administrators: Network administrators appreciate mesh networks for their ease of deployment and management. Mesh networks simplify the task of extending network coverage to remote or hard-to-reach areas, reducing the need for complex cabling or infrastructure.

End-Users: End-users benefit from mesh networks through improved connectivity and seamless roaming capabilities. Mesh networks provide consistent coverage across large areas, ensuring that users can stay connected without experiencing dropped connections or dead zones.

Technology Viewpoint

Mesh Network Protocols: Mesh networks use specialized protocols, such as Zigbee, Thread, or Wi-Fi Mesh, to enable communication between network nodes. These protocols define how nodes discover each other, form connections, and route data through the network.

Mesh Network Nodes: Mesh network nodes include routers, access points, and devices equipped with mesh networking capabilities. These nodes communicate wirelessly with each other, forming a self-healing mesh network that can dynamically adapt to changes in the network topology.

Data Viewpoint

Topology Data: Mesh networks collect data on network topology, including node locations, signal strength, and network traffic patterns. This data helps optimize network performance, identify potential bottlenecks, and improve overall network reliability and efficiency.

Usage Data: Mesh networks gather data on network usage, including bandwidth consumption, application usage, and user behavior. This data enables businesses to analyze usage patterns, allocate resources effectively, and optimize network performance to meet evolving demands.

Deployment Challenges

Site Survey: Before deployment, businesses conduct a site survey to assess the environment and determine the optimal placement of mesh network nodes. This involves evaluating factors such as building layout, obstacles, interference sources, and desired coverage areas.

Node Installation: Mesh network nodes are installed strategically throughout the coverage area, taking into account factors such as signal strength, line-of-sight, and interference. Nodes are typically connected wirelessly, eliminating the need for extensive cabling or infrastructure.
