Brainly, a Kraków-based technology company, provides an online learning platform where students can ask questions and get answers instantly. The platform is used by over 350 million students and parents across 35 countries. However, Brainly faced a challenge in making its platform more accessible and user-friendly for mobile users. Traditional typed queries on smartphones were cumbersome and less efficient. Furthermore, Brainly needed to ensure that its solutions were multilingual, given its global user base. The company also faced the challenge of maintaining stable service during peak usage times, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when the platform gained tens of millions of new users.
Brainly leveraged Google Cloud's Vision AI to build a 'Snap to Solve' feature for its mobile application. This feature allows students to take a photo of their question, which is then analyzed by Vision AI's optical character recognition (OCR) to extract words and sentences. If there's a perfect match for the query, Brainly delivers an instant answer within seconds. If not, the app conducts a full text search through Brainly's entire knowledge base to find a selection of relevant answers. The multilingual capabilities of Google Cloud made the Vision AI platform a perfect fit for Brainly. The company also used TensorFlow's Multilingual Universal Sentence Encoder to optimize its search algorithms and machine learning models. To manage the increased traffic during the pandemic, Brainly relied on the scalability of Google Cloud to ensure availability and performance.
