The customer in this case is N-iX, a game development company that sought to explore the possibilities of the Photon multiplayer platform and Unity game engine in VR. They aimed to create a unique multiplayer shooter game that would provide a challenging and entertaining interactive experience for players. The game was designed to support multiple VR platforms, including HTC Vive, Oculus, PS VR, and Gear VR. N-iX's goal was to showcase their expertise in developing multiplayer games and VR solutions, and to bring multiplayer shooting to VR in a way that is challenging enough to be fun, but simple enough to work with the complexities of virtual reality controls and spaces.
N-iX game developers were tasked with the challenge of creating a unique multiplayer shooter game that leverages virtual reality technology. The game, VR-iX, was designed to explore the capabilities of the Photon multiplayer platform and the Unity game engine in VR. The developers faced several challenges during the development process. These included the development of an artificial intelligence (AI) that would provide the player with a challenging battle against a virtual opponent, creating a lightweight game design that would ensure an entertaining interactive experience, adjusting the game design to the controllers to make the gameplay feel natural, implementing user teleportation using the weapon feature, and smoothly integrating multiplayer with the game dynamics.
To overcome these challenges, N-iX performed a number of R&D activities. They assembled a team of experienced game developers and 3D artists, brainstormed ideas for a multiplayer VR game, and selected the top 5 game concepts. After creating basic prototypes and conducting a playtest, they chose the VR shooter as the best idea. The team used Unity as the main game engine along with the Photon Engine framework for multiplayer functionality. Initially, the game supported HTC Vive and Oculus, and later PS VR and Gear VR headsets were added. The team created appealing game art, applied the latest tools and technologies, and implemented support of several VR platforms. As a result, they created an addictive multiplayer game with PvE and PvP modes, built-in AI, and engaging gameplay.
