Thermote & Vanhalst (TVH) is a leading specialist in the sales and leasing of forklift trucks, aerial work platforms, and industrial in-plant vehicles. The company has a presence in 162 countries and has branches in the United Kingdom, France, South Africa, Malaysia, Australia, China, Singapore, America, and Belgium. TVH has five different divisions, each with its own specializations: the Forklift Division, Parts Division, Handling Equipment Division, Rental Equipment Division, and Service & Repair Division. Globally, they employ around 2,400 people –1,100 at the head office in Belgium – who together generate a turnover of € 475 million.

TVH experienced rapid growth due to several successful takeovers, leading to a significant increase in data volume. Their existing reporting system, which relied heavily on Excel, was unable to handle the increased data load, resulting in slow processing times and a lack of clear overview. The company was using multiple data sources, including AS400, Oracle, and Progress, which further complicated the situation. The old system lacked flexibility and was unable to make necessary links, leading to insufficient collection of sales, customer, and item-related information. There was an urgent need for a new reporting system.

TVH implemented QlikView across four functional areas over four weeks for 40 users. With QlikView, TVH can now quickly create analyses of customers, products, stocks, prices, sales, and margins. QlikView Server (64-bit) allows TVH to leverage and manage the millions of data records locked in its AS/400 system and Oracle and Progress databases to achieve a global and clear view of performance. The implementation process was short and sweet. First, the IT staff were given very thorough training by Credon, their QlikView partner. Then they worked together on a plan of approach, after which the QlikView application was installed. The old statistics were then transferred, and finally the professionals were thoroughly trained, the data model was adapted and they started building the QlikView files.

Hospital Inventory Management
The hospital supply chain team is responsible for ensuring that the right medical supplies are readily available to clinicians when and where needed, and to do so in the most efficient manner possible. However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. Barcoding technology, a commonly used method for inventory management of medical supplies, is labor intensive, time consuming, does not provide real-time visibility into inventory levels and can be prone to error. Consequently, the lack of accurate and real-time visibility into inventory levels across multiple supply rooms in multiple hospital facilities creates additional inefficiency in the system causing over-ordering, hoarding, and wasted supplies. Other sources of waste and cost were also identified as candidates for improvement. Existing systems and processes did not provide adequate security for high-cost inventory within the hospital, which was another driver of cost. A lack of visibility into expiration dates for supplies resulted in supplies being wasted due to past expiry dates. Storage of supplies was also a key consideration given the location of the cancer center’s facilities in a dense urban setting, where space is always at a premium. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
